ACTIVITIES
The Monterey area is steeped in history and is in fact probably the oldest European settlement in the Golden State, and was the original capital of New Spain. You may know it today as the location of the HBO series ‘Big Little Lies,’ but to be honest, there’s plenty to see and do, from outdoor adventures, sightseeing, golf, exploring history, science, nature, shopping and dining.
MONTEREY AQUARIUM
Probably the crown jewel of aquatic life along the Pacific Coast, the world-class Monterey Bay Aquarium is a must-see. It’s only a few blocks from the hotel along historic Cannery Row. Allow several hours to fully experience this wonderful facility with its terrific exhibits and learn about the myriad sea life of the Monterey Bay. Open 10:00 am to 5:00 pm most days. Tickets range from $30 to $50 per person. Information and tickets available online: https://www.montereybayaquarium.org/
KAYAKING
Kayaking the Bay is easy to arrange and quite the adventure. Speaking of, there are several locations from Adventures by the Sea, which is only two blocks from the Monterey Bay Aquarium. AdventuresByTheSea.com or call (831) 655-2453. (They also offer paddleboards if that’s more your thing.)
BIKING
There’s a teriffic bike and multi-use path along what was once a railway, which has been converted for use by bikers, hikers and runners. Bikes available for rent from Adventures By The Sea, only two blocks from the Monterey Bay Aquarium. AdventuresByTheSea.com or call (831) 655-2453.
CANNERY ROW
Our hotel anchors one end of what was once a major canning industry for abundant seafood and for several blocks there were numerous canneries. Much of the infrastructure has been preserved and has been converted to shops, restaurants, hotels and the like. There’s much to see and do. Find out more here: CanneryRow.com
DINING
There are tons of local dining options within easy walking distance of the MPH, with an array of choices. Inside the hotel is Schooner’s, which offers excellent food for breakfast, lunch and dinner, all with a waterside flair, and a full bar. Just adjacent to the hotel is Tidal Coffee, which offers lighter (and cheaper) choices for breakfast and lunch and very good coffee drinks
Along Cannery Row there are pubs, restaurants and quick bites of various cuisines, and south of the hotel at the Old Fisherman’s Wharf are a number of very good seafood places.

AUTHORS
Noted authors Robert Louis Stevenson wrote part of ‘Treasure Island’ while living in Monterey. Jack London was a resident for a time. John Steinbeck was born about an hour away by car and is the writer most connected to Cannery Row (which featured prominently in a book of the same name). Monterey also makes an appearance in ‘East of Eden.’ If you have a car and the time, a drive to Salinas to visit the excellent John Steinbeck Museum is worthwhile. http://www.steinbeck.org/
SIGHTSEEING
If the history of the area isn’t a big enough draw, the stretch of coast along picturesque Pebble Beach known as the 17-Mile Drive is absolutely fabulous and there are tremendously good (but challenging!) golf courses. There is a cost of about $10 to drive along the road. More information here: https://www.pebblebeach.com/17-mile-drive/
CARMEL
Home at one time to famed photographer Ansel Adams and film star Clint Eastwood, Carmel is a wonderfully eclectic village of shops, restaurants, bed-and-breakfasts and is a short drive from Monterey. https://www.carmelcalifornia.com/visit-carmel.htm
GROCERIES and SUNDRIES
There’s a great supermarket just a block or so up the street from the Monterey Aquarium. It’s Andronico’s, and it’s worth a visit for anything you might need. https://www.andronicos.com/
PHARMACY
CVS has a location just a couple of blocks from the hotel. The pharmacy is open from 8:00 am to 9:00 pm weekdays and 9:00 am to 6:00 pm on weekends. The store itself is open 24 hours a day. CVS Store
WEATHER
Boasting consistently mild and sunny weather, Monterey is fairly easy to pack for — just keep in mind it’s all about layers. In the summer months, morning coastal fog may rest over downtown Monterey but usually burns off around midday. The average low temperature in August is 53 degrees Fahrenheit (12 degrees Celsius), and the average high is 20 degrees Celsius (or 68 Fahrenheit). Current forecast is for highs about 66 to 69 degrees and lows of 55 to 58.
ATTIRE
All events connected to the conference are business casual, with the exception of the Board of Directors dinner and the Business Conference meeting Monday. Suitable business wear is required at these events.
